The Luangwa valley is a beautiful region with several protected areas of which the South Luangwa National Park is best-known. It is part of the Great Rift Valley's geological formation, with the Luangwa River flowing somewhat 800m below the surrounding plateau. The vegetation includes both grassy plains and dense woodland and the game and birdlife is rich and varied - which is why it is one of Zambia - and Africa's - finest national parks.
